RESEARCH VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Music Listening and Movement in PD Study
A new study identifying biomarkers of music listening and how they are related to movement is now starting at Iowa State University (ISU). To participate, you must be between 18-30 if you are a young adult or between 50-85 if you are an older adult or have Parkinson’s disease (PD), do not have any other neurological or musculoskeletal disorder, and you are on stable medications for the last 30 days. Participants will complete a series of movement tasks of the fingers, hand, arm, and foot, a sit to stand task, and a short walking task. You will also be asked to sit quietly with a sensor placed and an EEG headband on the forehead for 3-45 minutes. You will do these tasks in the rounds, once while listening to no sound, once while listening to your preferred music, and once while listening to white noise. This study requires one visit to the Alterrnative Medicine and Music for PD lab on the ISU campus and may take approximately 2 hours. Further screening for eligibility will occur during the first study visit. If you would like more information, please contact the AMMPD Lab at 515-294-5476.
Singing and Complex Walking in PD Study
We are conducting research studying the relationship between singing and complex walking tasks among healthy young adults (18-35 years old), healthy older adults (36-85 years old), and persons with Parkinson’s Disease (55-85 years old). In this study, all participants will be asked to complete a series of questionnaires. Additionally, persons with Parkinson’s Disease will be asked Parkinson’s Disease specific information and complete a questionnaire which assesses Parkinson’s Disease specific health related quality of life. You will be asked to perform a series of walking tasks while singing a familiar childhood rhyme known as “Row Your Boat.” During the walking tasks, all participants will wear sensors to measure muscle activity, and movement. To participate, you must be familiar with the childhood rhyme “Row Your Boat” and have no additional neurological disorders (i.e., stroke etc.). If you have Parkinson’s Disease, you must have a stable regimen of antiparkinsonian and psychotropic medication for the last 30 days prior to participation and be able to walk without an assistive device. Further cognition and depression screening for all participants will be conducted the day of data collection. If this describes you, please consider contacting one of the researchers at [email protected] or at 515-294-5476.
Caregiver Buddy Study
A new study to develop an application to help caregivers of those with Parkinson’s disease (PD) is now starting. To participate, you must be a caregiver of someone with PD. Participants will complete an interview asking questions about your caregiver experience. This study requires one visit and may take approximately 1 hour. If you would like more information, please contact the AMMPD Lab at 515-294-5476
